The Retail Market in Germany

A total turnover amounted to € 483 billion in 2016 (€ 471.5 billion in 2015)

E-commerce: 12.7% of total sales in 2016 thanks to key players such as Amazon (€ 12.75 billion) and Otto (€ 7.7 billion)

Domination of key players belonging to food chain (Edeka, Rewe, Schwarz, Aldi and Metro) generating € 173.9 billion in sales alone (around 36% of the total amount generated)

Major retailers belonging to the large non-food retail chain: Obi, Bauhaus and Hornbach for DIY; MediaMarkt and Saturn for Appliances and Electronics; DM and Rossmann for the drugstore market; Höffner and Ikea for furnishing.

The Retail Market in Austria

 The combined turnover of the 100 largest Austrian retailers amounts to approximately € 36.3 billion.

The Austrian food retail market is marked by a strong concentration of REWE International and SPAR followed by the discounter HOFER.

Total absence of French players while German groups are present with REWE, HOFER (Aldi-Süd) and LIDL.

E-commerce is booming in Austria with an increase in online revenue of 14.2% between 2016 and 2017. This particularly affects the technology sectors and, to a lesser extent, fashion.

Kylii Kids, a specialist in digital and interactive kids corners games for retail, worked with Business France in order to conduct a targeted business trip mission in Germany. Their potential clients were difficult to approach for a company which is new on this market. Several contacts were initiated and the conclusion of a first collaboration with ECE, a real estate company with numerous shopping centers, was able to start successfully.

The commitment, rigor and precision of information and contacts provided by Business France made it possible for us to accelerate our international development. The rapid return on investment also allowed us to validate our commercial strategy.
